Why Vaccinations Matter
Vaccines protect your pet from serious diseases. Some of these diseases can be fatal. Vaccines also stop infections from spreading to other animals and, in the case of rabies, to people.
In Sri Lanka, rabies vaccination is required by law for all dogs. But vaccines go beyond legal requirements. Keeping your pet up to date is one of the simplest ways to help them live a long and healthy life.
Dog Vaccination Schedule in Colombo and Sri Lanka
Puppies should start vaccinations at around 6 to 8 weeks of age. Here is the general dog vaccination schedule that most vets in Colombo and across Sri Lanka follow.
| Age | Vaccine |
|---|---|
| 6 to 8 Weeks | First dose of DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) |
| 10 to 12 Weeks | Second dose of DHPP, First dose of Rabies vaccine |
| 14 to 16 Weeks | Third dose of DHPP |
| Annually | DHPP booster, Rabies booster |
Your vet may also recommend additional vaccines based on your dog's lifestyle. Dogs that spend time outdoors or around other animals may need extra protection.
Cat Vaccination Schedule in Sri Lanka
Kittens can begin vaccinations at around 6 to 8 weeks. The core vaccines for cats in Sri Lanka include FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) and Rabies.
| Age | Vaccine |
|---|---|
| 6 to 8 Weeks | First dose of FVRCP |
| 10 to 12 Weeks | Second dose of FVRCP, First dose of Rabies vaccine |
| 14 to 16 Weeks | Third dose of FVRCP |
| Annually | FVRCP booster, Rabies booster |
Indoor cats are still at risk. Even if your cat never goes outside, vaccination is recommended.
Rabies Vaccination in Sri Lanka
Rabies is a serious concern in Sri Lanka. The disease is fatal once symptoms appear, both in animals and humans. All dogs must be vaccinated under Sri Lankan law.
The first rabies vaccine is usually given at around 12 weeks of age. After that, your pet needs annual boosters.
If you adopt a pet and do not know their vaccination history, visit your vet as soon as possible. They can start a fresh course to make sure your pet is covered.
Tips for Pet Owners
- Keep a record of all vaccinations. Most vets will give you a card. Store it safely and bring it to every visit.
- Do not skip or delay boosters. Gaps in vaccination can leave your pet open to disease.
- Mild reactions after vaccines, like slight drowsiness or reduced appetite, are usually normal and pass within a day. Contact your vet if symptoms last longer.
